About the Fourth Avenue Banners:

The Banners featured in the following Lens&Pens PhotoGraphics Collection, were first installed on the Avenue, in Tucson, Arizona, in August of 2006.

To mark the occasion, a short Article appeared in the Tucson Citizen, announcing the event. Following is an excerpt from the Citizen Online Archive, 2006-2009 (originally published on the Tucson Citizen Website):

“Light and color are starting to grace Fourth Avenue after dark.

Pink, green, orange, lavender and blue banners decorated with artwork from past street fair posters were installed this week on light posts on the six blocks between University Boulevard and Ninth Street.

In all, there are 60 banners with poster art by local artists Diana Madaras, Jessica McCain, Rand Carlson, Kurt Tallis and Amado Peña.

The twist is, 45 banners will be lighted at night.

‘I don’t know of anybody in the city that has lighted banners,’ said John Sedwick, executive director of the 4th Avenue Merchants Association.”

Twenty Themes:

Of the Sixty Banners, originally installed in 2006, there were Twenty Unique Themes, representing some characteristic aspect of Southeastern Arizona, the Flora and Fauna of the Region, the Local Culture, and the Art and Music.

In the Summer of 2012, the Fourth Avenue Lens&Pens PhotoGraphics Project, capturing all Twenty Banner Themes, was begun and completed. The result was the Collection 2012, and later the Catalog 2012, (Revised Edition 2014) below presented as the TRIBUTE SERIES.

In Winter 2012-2013, many of the Banners along the Avenue, despite the years of weathering, are still colorfully adorning the Historic Avenue Light Poles. Altogether, the Light Poles and Banners comprise an essential part of the character that is unmistakably: Tucson Fourth Avenue.

Tucson Trolley Themes:

In the Lens&Pens Collection 2014, are Five Trolley Themes: The Green Trolley, Happy Trolley, Model Trolley, Tucson Trolley and the Yellow Trolley. For reference, these PhotoGraphics appear in

the Fourth Avenue Spring 2014 Souvenir Banner Poster Catalog as:

7. Green Trolley, 8. Happy Trolley, 10. Model Trolley, 18. Tucson Trolley, and 20. Yellow Trolley.

In the near Future, possibly late 2014, and certainly by 2015, it is anticipated that the Tucson Modern Streetcar, SunLink, will fulfill every item of its promise. And potentially, the Vintage Old Pueblo Trolley Cars #869 and #1511, will share the New Tracks along the Avenue; transporting Visitors, Students, and Townspeople, in style and comfort.
